Notes for Henry Franklin Broadwell

Henry F. Broadwell, an enterprising farmer, of Center Township, was born in Warrick County, Indiana, Oct. 1, 1838.

His father, Henry Broadwell, a native of North Carolina, came to this state in 1818, and in 1828 located in Warrick County. He served as Captain in the Twelfth Kentucky Infantry, during the war of 1812 and died in Gibson County, August 31, 1870, at the age of 77.

His father, David Broadwell, was born in North Carolina and died at Hopkinsville Kentucky.

The mother of Henry F. Broadwell bore the maiden name of Shiloh Polson and was born near the "Natural Bridge" in Virginia. Her children are:

1. Clinton (deceased)
2. Nancy (deceased) wife of W.F. Fowler
3. David, of York County, Nebraska
4. Emily, wife of John Townsend, of Anderson Co., Kansas
5. Clarissa, widow of John Benton of York Co., Nabraska
Clarissa later married Miles Chambers, had a son Leonard of Omaha, a daughter, Winifred, deceased, high school age.
6. Leroy of Pike County, Indiana
7. Thomas, deceased
8. Henry F.
9. John W., deceaseds

There was also a half-brother and a half-sister, W.P. and Ellen, both of whom have passed away.

Henry F. Broadwell acquired his education in the district schools and was reared in agricultural pursuits. In 1859 he came to Gibson county and purchased a farm which he is now successfully operating. It comprises one hundred and eighty acres of valuable land and the well-toiled fields and many improvements on the place indicates the thrift and enterprize of the owner. All his property has been acquired through his own efforts and fortune deals kindly with these who are willing to help themselves.

October, 1861, Mr. Broadwell joined to boys in Blue, Company A, 58th Indiana Infanty. He was wounded at Chickamauga and for 15 days lay on the Battlefield. He was also wounded at Stone River. For three years he faithfully served his country, and then was Honorably discharged, November 25, 1864.

Mr. Broadwell was married in Gibson County, May 7, 1865, to Sarah E. Downey, daughter of J.M. Downey, one of Gibson County's pioneers. Their children are:

1. Martha B., wife of W.A. Meade
2. Mary D., wife of H.W. Mans
3. David S.
4. James L., who died in 1893
5. Rufus A.
6. Emily C., wife of H.W. Witherspoon
7. Elizabeth E.
8. John W.

Mr. Broadwell belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church and is a man whose sterling worth commends him to the confidence and respect of all.

He was still living in 1897 when Gibson Co. History was written.
