Notes for Fernando Baker

Hester Qualls, grandson of Fernando Baker says he remembers that his grand dad died on a river boat and his grandmother drown at Grand Gulf, MS. He was around seven at the time.

Notes on Fernando Baker and his family was information given to Polly Marie (Wrenn) Witherspoon, his granddaughter.

A family bible was in possesion of Jessie Qualls, Sr. Hester Qualls now lives in the house in Port Gibson, MS, and everything in the home.

On Feb. 4, 2000, I went to the Port Gibson, MS, Claiborne County Courthouse to search land deeds and wills. Apparently, Fernando never owned land in Claiborne County. The theory is if his family lived on a houseboat, no census records and/or land deeds may be found. The courthouse house suggested contacting Jackson, MS, for a death certificate.

Fernando Baker was born in Ohio (by family records) and married to Nancy E. Young in Pemiscot Co., Missouri in 1891. Fernando raised his family on a houseboat on the Mississippi River along St. Joseph, Louisiana to Port Gibson, Mississippi, even down to New Orleans, Louisiana. Their main focus was a big fishing port was around Port Gibson, Mississippi.

My grandmother, Martha Mae Baker, (now deceased) stated that she married on the river to Willie Alexander Wrenn. She recorded that she lived on the river until she was married and then she finally settled in Avon, Mississippi. She said that it was a happy life; no bills, or worries, but that it was a bit more unclean because they washed their clothes in the Mississippi River as well. They sold or peddled fish and other river animals to buy the things they could not produce on thier own (flour, meal, and coffee). She also state that occassionally the houseboats would get together and they would all get drunk. Another thing she remembered was that on Sundays they would visit each other and eat fish or chicken dinners.

She also stated that Fernando was a Scout in the war when he was a young man. The only war I can imagine is the Spanish-Indiana War.

Marriage certificate on record in New Madrid, Missouri (County seat).
