Notes for Andrew Gudgel


Andrew's family immigrated to the U.S. in about 1744 when Andrew was 17. He changed the name from Gattschalk to Gudgel. He later married Elizabeth Paul Paine (Payne or Kayne) as his third wife.

Will of Andrew Gudgel
I, Andrew Gudgel of the county of Knox Indiana, Being weak of body but sound of mind, calling to mind the mortality of man. Do make and ordain this my last will in manner and form following; Viz.

First: I lend (and give the use of) all the property, household and kitchen Furniture, farming tools and together with the land on which I now live and every of the appurtenances thereto belonging to my wife Elizabeth, during her life for her to use and maintenance.

Secondly: at the death of my wife Elizabeth GUDSHALL I will and desire the land whereon I now live being 65 acres adjoining Robert McGary on the south to my son William Godshall and his heirs forever.

Thirdly: It is my will and desire that all my property of all kinds, stock of horses, cattle and all kinds which may belong to my estate, house, and kitchen furniture tools should be equally divided between children Sophia, Nancy and Hetty to be divided by persons chosen by my executor hereafter mentioned by valuation so as to supercede the use of a sale to them and their heirs forever.

Fourthly: It is my will and desire that my children not mentioned in this will should have and legally be entitled to the portions which I have already given them and no more.

Fifthly: It is my will and desire that my wife Elizabeth GUDSHALL should act as my Executor to this my last will and testament disannulling every other will whatsoever. In witness whereas I have herein to set my hand and seal this 21st Day of January 1812 Signed) Andrew Gudgel. Teste, Jesse Musick, Robert McGary

Some information on Andrew and children was found on FamilySearch.org, IGI Records, AFN#: 3MHQ-PL, for Andrew.

Linda Gudgel Finnell states that Andrew owned land and a mill in Woodford Co., Kentucky, and due to disputes over a clear title he lost his land and went to Gibson Co., IN, in 1810/1811.

Andrew had 17 children overall by all three wives.

Andrew was a Veteran of the Revolutionary War.

Also listed in the Montogemery Township Cemetery book, p. 99 is Samuel L. Teel 20 Dec 1849 - 09 Aug 1851 and Oscar J. Summers 11 Aug 1855 - 29 Sep 1856
