Notes for John William Witherspoon

John had 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls (four girls from first marriage).

Have received information on his first wife and children from Craig J. Woods via email (WoodsCJ@LOUISVILLE.STORTEK.COM).

Information from Ernie Lasley (elasley@comsource.net) via internet as of 21 Mar 1998.
The gravesite is in a group of four, like a family plot, on the east side of the cemetary. The northernmost grave is that of John and Margaret. Margaret, according to the inscription on the stone, is buried "By His Left Side', as was the custom. The next grave in the plot has yet to be identified, as most of the headstone is missing. The third grave is that of a child, Samuel Dougan, who died 2 Sept, 1843. He was more than likely related to Mary Jane Dougan, who married Jackson D. Witherspoon 13 March, 1845. There are two other Dougan children buried close by, both named Mary E. The last grave in this plot is that of Elizabeth Erwin. I have not as yet found any tie to the Witherspoon family, but I would think since she is buried in the same plot, there is a connection somewhere.

Mike Patterson
John moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC where he enlisted in the Revolution. Later moved to Morgan Co., Alabama, then to Gibson County, Indiana.

Craig Woods
Where they married is not certain - could be N. Carolina, Tennessee, or Alabama. They had 6 sons and 2 daughters whom they raised in Morgan County, Alabama. Most of the family came to Gibson County, Indiana about 1830, where John and Margaret died.

Greg Witherspoon
His sons, Moses, William Patterson, and John M. purchased the land from the Vincennes Land Office sometime after 1820.

My DAR Supplemental Application on John Witherspoon was approved December 19, 1999. The DAR supplemental number is 787606812.

The old headstone for John and Margaret Witherspoon is as follows: "In memory of," and the last name of Witherspoon at the top. The first name is not readable, only some of the letters can be distinguished. Then, "who died (date not ledgible) 1843, aged (not ledgible) days". Further down the stone is the words, "By his left side is Margaret, consort of John Witherspoon." The date is barely readable on the stone, and gives her age as 65 years, 8 months, and 13 days. - Information given by Ernie Lasley. The Woods cemetary (Marsh Creek Cemetery) is located about 3 miles southwest of Princeton in Patoka Township, Gibson County, Indiana. It is at the intersection of county road 200 south and 350 west.[j_m_witherspoon.FTW]
