Have been trying to prove that William STEPHENS was the father of our BARNABAS STEPHENS. So far the land discription of William STEPHENS Bladen Co., NC 1740 comes close to matching the land description of land that Barnabas STEPHENS sold in Cumberland Co., NC sometime in the 1860's. Barnabas STEPHENS was born 1728 t0 1730. in Bertie Co., NC. died about 1782. Helen Leary CG. "Rev. War Vouchers Charity STEPHENS was issued a voucher for taxes this was a strong indication she was a widow". Charity BROWN STEPHENS was born c 1733 Bertie Co., NC. From Tax Records we came to the conclusion William STEPHENS was born about 1750. In 1771 Bladen Co., NC Tax list William STEPHENS is living on his own. I have been studig the early county maps and I finally figure out that our John HOLMES land, William BROWN property was in Bertie Co. NC. this land fell into Edgecome County. NC and when Halifax Co., NC was formed it fll into Halifax County Co., NC. There was a very small part of Halifax County that became Martain County. Thre were a number of STEPHENS in this area.
