Notes for David Broadwell

Mike Broadwell from Atlanta, GA, mentioned a Julia Benoit living in Slidell, LA, has having published a genealogy of the Broadwells (appearantly my line).

Marge Rice on 30 Mar 1998
Father of David was David Broadwell, Sr., and mother was Hester Curry.

Marge Rice on 07 Mar 2000
1) THOMAS BROADWELL: See ID #132 for information on known child, David. I have no actual proof that Thomas was father of the William Broadwell shown below, but there are many items of evidence to point to this conclusion. Thomas Broadwell was one of 12 jurors in a case in the Chowan precinct of NC, in October 1723. There may have been other children of Thomas and his wife, whose name was possibly Hannah Law.

Father of Thomas Broadwell was John Broadwell. This information comes from an unknown early source of mine, and is theorized by researcher Trelby Parris Brady to be correct. He says that per "Early Settlers of Maryland", pg. 581, in 1668, John A. Broadwell was "transported" to Maryland. He shows that in 1657 a William Broadwell was born, who later married Mary Morse, and that Richard Broadwell was born 1694/1699, and she married Hannah Bounell. Both William and Richard are in the New Jersey Broadwell line, whereas apparently Thomas was the earliest to arrive in North Carolina.

The William Broadwell I believe to have been David's brother was born about 1760 (per Kay Sakaris of Pasadena, TX). This William was a Revolutionary War Soldier, per "Cherokee (GA) Land Lottery" by James F. Smith (1832). He died ca 1825 in Wake Co., NC. His will was signed 12 Oct 1825 Wake Co., NC. He was married by 1780 to Christian . Between 1772 and 1780, he bought land from John Fleetwood in Bertie Co., N.C., worked on a road, and was on road commission in Bertie Co., and is shown to have sold land, with his wife Christian. In August 1785, he "worked with his hands on the road." 1800 & 1820 tax lists of Wake Co., NC show a William Broadwell. Kay W.Sakaris, descendant of William and Christian shows the following children:
A. Jesse YOB: ca 1780; married 5 Jan 1803 Wake Co., NC to Nancy Previt
B. Frankey/Fanny YOB: ca 1782; married "an old man" John Fort, (born 1740/41 Surry Co., VA). She died 8 May 1834 in Wake Co.
C. Mary YOB: 1783, married 23 Nov 1808 Wake Co., NC to Willie Nichols Sr. Mary died 1869.in Prairie Co., Arkansas.
D. John YOB: ca 1790; married 25 Aug 1811 Any Gulley in Wake Co. Later married to an Achsah Gulley
E. William YOB: ca 1790; married 25 Jan 1821 Wake Co. to Delilah Holloway
F. Freeman YOB: ca 1791; married 7 Apr 1812 Wake Co. to Amelia Nichols
G. Charlotte YOB: ca 1795 NC; married 27 Jan 1818 Wake Co.to Alsey Nichols. She died 8 Sept 1867 Prairie Co., Arkansas.

2) DAVID BROADWELL SR.:
The YOB I show for David - of 1726 or before - comes from Court records in Bertie Co., NC on 5 Jul 1747, where David witnessed a land sale "on Cashy River at Sohikey Neck". To do so, he would have had to be at least 21 yrs. of age. Another land sale was witnessed by him on 17 Dec 1748. (See N.C. Book G., pages 48, 168, 191). Researcher Don Broadwell told me that he saw a 1739 tax list for Bertie Co., NC, showing a David Broadwell; if this was THIS David Broadwell, he likely was born before 1718, to have been ae 21 in 1739.

David bought 200 acres (+or-) in Bertie Co. on 13 Feb 1749, from Thomas Ryan, and paid 106 pounds for it. At that time, his occupation was listed as "a carpenter". The property was per Deed Book G., pg. 206, listed as "beginning at James Curry's corner tree as gum, thence No. 55 west 160 poles to a pine on Pell Mell Pocoson side, thence No. 35 east 200 poles to a pine on the pocoson side, thence So. 35 W. 200 poles to the first station." This James Curry was, I believe from research, David's future father in law. See Hester's data sheet. On 1757 tax list, his name is "David Broadwell - one male", which may or may not indicate he had not married by then. (See "NC Taxpayers 1701-1786").

In Oct 1762, he worked on the Courthouse and was paid 3 pounds. Court records show that money was paid to him between 1763 and 25 Sep 1765, in regard to the estate of John Hill, esquire. On 4 Jun 1765, he served on a jury in Bertie Co. In 1769, he is shown to have paid tax there, and name is listed with "2 free whites" on Co. tax list.

David and Hester were married BY 22 Oct 1750, for she was listed as Hester Broadwell when she witnessed her father's will.

David died before 4 Mar 1772, for on that date, his wife Hester relinquished her right to qualify as Administrator of his estate (of "David Bradwell") to a William (listed as "Bradwell") - this from NC Hist. and Gen. Reg., pg. 450. The inventory of his estate was on 17 Mar 1772. Will was proved 26 March 1772. (See Bertie Co. NC Minutes, Book IV 1781-1787, pgs. 4-119). I had for years assumed this William to be her son, however upon further research, I now believe this William was the brother of deceased David, and not her son (who would have been only ae 11 at the time). See data under father Thomas #264.

I believe, but cannot prove as yet, that this David was the son of Thomas Broadwell, who lived in Bertie Co. from at least 1722 to at least 1725 when he witnessed land deeds. From early research, I show that this Thomas WAS the son of John Broadwell, immigrant in 1668 "from Skordas". (As of January, 2000, I do NOT know where Skordas is/was.) On 30 Mar 1724, Thomas "Brodwell" came to court to prosecute a suit against a Thomas Old---(unclear).

DAR Magazine, Sept., 1948, pg. 725 states that David and Hester had at least three children:
1. DAVID See ID #66
2. William YOB: ca 1761, Lots of confusion exists with researchers of William Broadwell of this time frame, in NC, since there were a number by that name; see data under #264 (father Thomas) for info on David's brother William.
3. Lydia YOB: 1762 Married Archibald Wilford; bond 1 Nov 1786. Archibald Wilford was also a Revolutionary War soldier. Per Wilford-Williford History, there is indication that Lydia was a widow in Bertie Co. a/o February, 1815. Their children 1790 census, Bertie Co., were 2 daughters.

A possible relative of this David Broadwell was Esther McMillin (of Harrison Co., NC), who wrote her will on 18 Jul 1832 and listed daughter Mary E. Broadwell, and grandchildren Mary Hester McMillin and Hester E. McMillin. One of the witnesses to this will was James R. Curry. Too many similarities here to not mention here in David Sr.'s datasheet.

Although David (the father of David, William and Lydia) died before 4 Mar 1772, there is documentation that he had land in the western half of Weakley Co., TN, "On 30 May 1829 Lydia Wilford sold .. of her father David Broadwell, in Weakley Co., TN" My research leads me to the belief that this 640 acres was a government land grant as payment to David Broadwell for his Revolutionary War service, as in the sale of the property, Lydia states it was for "being the service right of David Broadwell", her father. The land was sold for $300.00 on 30 May 1829.

The description is "a certain tract or parcel of land containing 640 acres, it being for the service right of David Broadwil being and lying in the State of Tennessee, Weakley County, in District 13th, Range 3 & 4 & Section 6 warrant No. 986 Entry 986 on the waters of the middle fork of Obion River." I am somewhat puzzled by this Weakley Co., TN land, in that as far as I can determine, this portion of TN was not developed until the "Western Purchase" on 19 Oct 1818, and my understanding is that prior to that, it was simply open land. Weakley Co. was formed in 1823 FROM the Western District. Further research is in order. There is no indication I can find that David Sr. ever actually lived in Tennessee.

On 1 Oct 1821, "Lydia Wilford, heir at law of David Brodwell, late a private in Baker's Company in the 10th Regt. N.C. line, in the revolutionary army .. do appoint James Freeman, my attorney .. to receive .. a warrant .. for such quantity of land as I may be entitled." (Per C.R. 10.911.1 - Rev. War Papers). So, it appears that Lydia was here claiming entitlement to land of her brother David, not her father.

Sources include census records, Weakley Co., TN Histories; 1790, 1800, 1810 and 1820; "Wilford-Williford Family Book/Treks Into America" by Eurie Pearl Neel (page 23); land deed books in Weakley Co., TN (Books A & B, pg. 271); Deed books in Bertie Co., NC.; Hathaway's NC Historical and Genealogical Register; pg. 14.

3) HESTER CURRY:
While in Bertie Co., NC in 1997, I found proof that on 22 Oct 1750, a Hester Broadwell witnessed the will of James Curry. This information, as well as the fact that David Broadwell purchased in 1749 200 acres of property adjacent to that owned by James Curry led me to believe the connection. Proof now extsts that Hester Curry was the daugther of James Curry (Coree?) and wife May/Mary from NC Intestate records, from "Index to Hathaway's Register", page 14 (where it says James and May Coree of Bertie Co.).

"North Carolina Will Abstracts 1660-1790, copied from "Ancestry (online) shows the will of James Corree, with wife/executrix: Mary. Sons listed were James, David, John, Jacob, with daughters shown as Margret Corree and Janet. One of the witnesses (although not named as a daughter here) was Hester Broadwell. The will dated Bertie Co. was 22 Oct 1750 was probated May 1754.

John Curry of Bertie Co., the son of James Curry, had a wife named "Joice" Curry, the daughter of Thomas Hawkins (data from Bertie Co. NC Wills 1781-1797" by Almasy).

4) DAVID BROADWELL JR.
Name of spouse for David is a mystery, however when I began this addiction of Genealogy research in 1978, I corresponded with an elderly lady named Opal Phillips who stated that the wife's name was Sarah and she was born in 1758 and died in 1825. She could give no sources for this info, however. In 1998, on the Internet, I met Michael Witherspoon of Lake Charles, LA, who also shows Sarah (1758-1825).

Children of David Broadwell and wife (maybe named Sarah?) all born in NC:
1. Rachel DOB: 1783 (or as late as 1786) in Bertie Co. N.C. Married 1804 LeRoy Jackson. Settled in Warren Co., Kentucky
2. Clarissa DOB: 1786 (possibly as late as 1788) Unmarried.
In 1850, Clarissa lived with her sister Frances Rice in Warrick Co., IN, at home of Elenor and Axley Rice, and listed her ae as 50, when she surely was 62 to 64. Researcher Vaughn Rice of Bloomington, IN shows that Clarissa Broadwell (this one?) married John M. Chambers on 14 Mar 1850 Warrick Co. and he lists Indiana State Library as his source; my 1850 printed census for Warrick Co., however, shows no John M. Chambers.

There is record of a Clarissa Broadwell buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Warrick Co., IN very near Joseph RISE, showing that she died 6 Dec 1844, age 31 y., 2 m., 12 d. Who is THIS Clarissa?
3. FRANCES See ID #33 (was living when 1790 census taken)
4. John DOB: 1790 (possibly as late as 1792) Married Rebecca Allen in Orange Co., IN 14 Mar 1823. Settled in Warrick Co., IN and in 1850 census both were living (John ae 54 and Rebecca ae 50), with Mariah, William and David: John died 1864 in Warrick Co. and Rebecca still was living in Hart Twp. at the 1870 census

B. William (born ca 1826)
C. Mary (born 21 Nov 1827; married 21 Sep 1843 Sidwell Sims, and they were parents of Nancy (1845), Martha (1857) and John (born 27 Sep 1849).
D. David (born ca 1840)
5. Henry DOB: 8 Oct 1793 in NC; he married 14 Jan 1817 Elizabeth Shiloh Polson (Her DOB: 22 Nov 1798 VA; died 20 Sept 1851). Henry was in Orange Co., IN at the time of 1820 census but by July1829, was in Hart Twp., Warrick Co., IN, where he was declared a Justice of the Peace. (Note that Hart Twp. was created in Sept. 1826. After death of Elizabeth, he married 2) Emily Palmer. Henry died 31 Aug 1870 Warrick Co., IN. Children:
A. Clinton (born before 1820 census)
B. Nancy (born 7 Apr 1820); married Wiley. F. Fowler 9 Feb 1851. He was from Pike Co. Children included Penina, Sarah, John M.
C. David (born 2 Sep 1822); married Warrick Co. 20 Mar 1850 Catherine Welty, and he died 13 Sep 1901
D. Emily (born 9 Aug 1825); married John Townsend.

7) Elizabeth E. (also known as Ella?)
8) John Wesley, born 16 Nov 1840; married Nellie
Powell. John W. was the last of Elizabeth's children, but Henry's marriage to Emily Palmer produced:
AA. W. P.
BB. Ellen

Broadwell researcher, Donald Broadwell of Menomonie, WI states that OUR David is often confused with the David Broadwell who was the son of William Broadwell III. That David was born 27 Sep 1747 and died 9 Mar 1816. He lived in Plattsburg, NY, having moved there in 1803/4. He married 1) Mary Howell (1748 to 9 Apr 1769) and 2) Sabera "Sibbah" Wilcox (1745 to 17 May 1783), and 3) Elizabeth Carrol (1765 to 1839). Children from Sibbah were William, Stephan, Noah, Aaron and Rachel. Only child from Elizabeth was David Benton "Squire" Broadwell, born18 Jul 1795 and died 1871. This should be noted to avoid possible confusion in the future.

My research shows that our David Broadwell (1760-post 1809) moved from Bertie Co., NC to Warren Co., KY after the 1800 census was taken, but before 1809, with evidence that he may have been there as early as 1802.

I did research in both Bertie Co., NC, and in Warren Co., KY, showing the following, which cover BOTH father and son:
A. David Broadwell was private from North Carolina in Baker's Company, 10th reg. enlisting on 4 May 1776 in the Revolutionary War. Name was spelled BRODWELL, when as a private he received pay on 1 May 1791 (had to be past due pay). He was listed as from the Hillsborough District. Name also spelled BRODNELL.
B. Quote from D.A.R. September, 1948 Magazine, page 725: "DAVID BROADWELL, ENLISTED MAY 4, 1776 UNDER CAPT. ABRAHAM SHEPPARD, 10TH REGIMENT OF NORTH CAROLINA; SERVED 2-1/2 YEARS AND RECEIVED PAY AT HILLSBORO, HALIFAX AND WARRENTON, N.C.THROUGH 1782-1792. PURCHASED LAND IN BERTIE CO., N.C.1777, 1791, AND 1793; SOLD LAND 1793. HIS SISTER LYDIA MARRIED ARCHIBALD WILFORD; A BROTHER WILLIAM MARRIED CHRISTIAN ----" .
C. Proofs include 1880 census of Warrick Co., IN; marriage record and obituary record of Ellen Rice, also census and obituary of Axley Rice; Pike Co., Ind. History by Goodspeed, p. 450; Warrick Co., IN History by Goodspeed, p. 204; 1800 census of Bertie Co., N.C., information from Faye Kinder, of Tampa, FL; also Ruth Nicholson and Opal Phillips, both of so. Indiana.
D. Important notes collected over a period of years, especially during trip to Warren Co., KY in August, 1992, listing David(I & II) in NC and KY:
- 1772 - On 14 Oct, after the death of his father, it was ordered by the Court (Bertie Co., NC.) that David Brodwell be paid for work on the Court House (#600, page 102).
- 1776 - David (II) Broadwell was in Baker's Co., Rev. War, private, having enlisted 4 May 1776 (omt'd in '79) - from North Carolina. From NC State Records of 1782-1783, Vol. 16, page 1018, David served with the 10th regt. under Col. Abraham Shepard.
- 1786 - Lydwea/Lydia Broadwell married Archibald Wilford (Windsor, N.C.) (Bertie Co., NC 1779-1800 Marriages).
- 1786 - David (II) was appointed as a searcher of land in the upper end of Indian Woods District, Bertie Co., NC. (also from May to Aug 1788).
- 1790 - Census shows David (II) Broadwell with 4 females in Edenton Distr. (wife and 3 dau. Rachel, Clarissa & Frances) and 1 male (himself) and 14 slaves (pg 11).
- 1791 - David (II) Broadwell bought 200 acres in Bertie Co., NC on 11 Jan. from a James Burn. David paid for the land in 100 pounds of gold and silver. Source is Deed Book P., page 205.
- 1791 - David (II) Brodwell, private, received war pay in May, 1791, NC.
- 1793 - David (II) bought 90 acres of land 6 Nov 1793 Bertie Co., NC., from George West, Exec. Sources: Deed Book P, page 458, and Minutes of Bertie Co., Book I, 1724-1772.
- 1800 - Bertie Co. Census shows David Broadwell with 2 males under 10 (Henry & John), 1 male 26-45 (himself), 1 female 0 to 10 (Frances), 1 female 10-16 (Clarissa), 1 female 16-26 (Rachel) and 1 female 26-45 (wife), w/ 0 others (pg. 28).

All below are from Warren County, KY records:
- 1800/01 - no Broadwell or any similar spelling
- 1802 - Both David Brandwell and David Broadrick showed on tax list
- 1803 - David Broadrick was on tax list, no specific location
- 1804 - David Braswell on tax list, on "Big Barren" River
- 1806 - David Bradwell on tax list, on Big Barren River
- 1807 - David Broadwick on tax list; no Bradwell/Broadwell
- 1809 - A David Brendwell married Sarah Beggles 24 Aug 1809. This is also shown as David Bradwell marrying Sarah Begler, with the "sec" listed as Jonathan Hobson. This lead should be pursued in the future, since this could be a definite connection to our Broadwell family. - 1809 - 3 May, 35 acres sold on Big Barren River, to David Bradwell, for $100.00, "being the place whereon said Bradwell now lives, by deed dated 10 Oct 1805. Tract begins on said River at line of George Martin."

The 1810 Warren Co., KY Census shows two David Bradwells(!), one on pg.16, listed with 1 male 26-45, 1 female 26-45, 1 male 10-16, 1 male under 10. (Our David would have been about 50, his wife about the same, and their sons ages 7 and 8 to 10). The second David Bradwell was on pg. 252 with three males listed (one over 45, one 10-16 and one 16-26) with one female 26-45.A William Bradwell was in the 1810 KY census in Franklin Co.

Care must be taken to differentiate David Broadwell Sr. and D. B. Jr. We know that D. B. Jr. served in Revolutionary War, but there is possibility that the father did as well. The "Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants" by L. D. Bockstruck, pg. 63, states "David Broadwell, NC, private, 6 Sep 1821, 640 acres" but doesn't say where the land grant was. David Sr. had died by 1821, so this surely refers to son David. Unless father David served in Rev. War, how did he get the Rev. War land grant in TN which his dau. Lydia Broadwell Wilford sold? This subject should be pursued in the future.

One other item, which should be researched in the future, is the David Broadwell, who was on the 1812 Muster rolls, a private, serving in Riddle's Regiment, in the Ohio Militia (records are in Roll-Box 25). Who was THIS David Broadwell; and if it was just after our David disappeared/died? in Hopkinsville, KY, could it be that he actually went to OH and did serve in war of 1812 - at ae 50-60? Should be researched.

5) FRANCES BROADWELL
Frances Broadwell was born in North Carolina. Father was David Broadwell (See ID #66). She died at age 87 on 7 Sep 1876, and obituary in theBoonville (IN) "Standard" says that she "in the company of her husband, left their native state, North Carolina, in 1813, and settled in Indiana while it was a territory and wilderness country. In 1827, her husband opened up a farm where Mt. Zion Church now (1876) stands, and upon which she spent her life." While both Joseph and Frances MAY have come from No. Carolina, they did NOT leave N.C. iin 1813, for they were married in 1809 in Warren Co., KY.

At time of the 1850 census, Frances at ae 58 lived with son Miles, ae 35, and wife Lydia and two small children. Also enumerated there was Frances's apparently unmarried younger sister Clarissa Broadwell, as stated ae 50. The name was spelled Bradwell, and it is stated that she was born in So. Carolina; since the spelling is wrong, I believe, based on NC information, that the state should be North Carolina.

Children of Frances (Broadwell) and Joseph Rice were (all born Warren Co.,KY):
1. AXLEY - See RIN #16
