Notes for Mary Ann Armstrong

Taken from "Some Descendants of the James Armstrongs" by Virginia Armstrong Bryan.

Third child fo Capt. William and Jane Lapsley Armstrong, Mary was born in Orange County, NC. the bond for her marriage to Alexander Tinnin is dated 27 June, 1787. Alex, who had served for nine months as a private in the North Carolina Line, was the eldest of four children of John and Mary Tinnin of Orange County.

Mary and Alex had at least five children while living in North Carolina. In 1796, Mary received a bequest from her grandfather, James Armstrong, of a slave woman with four children. In the summer of 1800, Alexander and his father entered into a rather unusual contract. John Tinnin agreed that after his death, his plantation, five slaves, assorted livestock, tools and equipment were to become Alexander's property, but until then would be retained for John's exclusive use. Upon his father's death, Alexander could take possession of the estate only after paying specified sums to a brother, James, the widow of his brother Hugh and to John Griffin, a brother-in-law. The document was witnessed by Mary Tinnin's brother, Thomas Armstrong.
