Origin of Mott(e) name is French and means someone who lived by a fortified stronghold. It also meant a person "of the mountain". Mott names are most common today in England in Essex County - info from James Richard Ingram.

During the Indian Wars, Joseph served in the Wilmington Company from SC commanded by Capt. George Merrick on Nov 27, 1752.
