Sarah's parents died when she was about 10 years old. Sarah was raised by Thomas Terrell and Nancy S. Kelton Peavy, her sister's family. Thomas also married her sister Margaret L., 9 Jun 1836. He married Nancy S., 19 Feb 1845 after Margaret's death, 9 Aug 1844. Thomas was also executor for the will of Sarah's father, James.
