M. L. Howard records indicate that he may have been enlisted with Company E. Wauls Legion, which later consolidated with Co. I, Timmon's Regiment. Timmon's Regiment served in the defense of Galveston. He is known to be enlisted with friend G. W. Lakey who is recorded as witnessing his death and returning his personal affects to his widow Serepta Howard.
1860 San Augustine County, Texas Federal Census shows Washington Howards age as 28 and born in Tennessee. His wife's name was given as Serepta Howard.
