Hi Candie:
I am a grandson of NANCY JANE DAWSON. She married my grandfather JOHN LIMUEL LOVETT.
NANCY was a half sister to THOMAS DAWSON. I have a good history of the early DAWSON family. ISAAC my great grandfather was born in Ohio.

THE LIFE AND FAMILY OF ISAAC DAWSON OF OHIO By Raymond D Lovett,Sr.
ISAAC N. DAWSON a master carpenter was born in Trumbull County, Ohio. ISAAC was the son of Joseph and Rachel ROSE DAWSON. JOSEPH DAWSON was born in Virginia, RACHEL ROSE was born in North Carolina. JOSEPH and RACHEL were married around 1800 in Virginia. They moved to Ohio before 1815. They Possibly went through Pensylvania before going to Ohio. This information can be found in the Morman Church Micro-Fische in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. ISAAC DAWSON married first, ELIZABETH JANE CARTRIGHT, 6 July 1839 in Taswell County, Illinois. In the 1850 Census of Missouri, ISAAC and ELIZABETH JANE DAWSON were living in Benton County, Missouri. In the 1950 Census their children were THOMAS I. DAWSON a son, 6 yrs old, and a daughter J. DAWSON, 2 yrs old. ISAAC was living next to JACOB DAWSON who also was from Ohio, so I assume this person to be ISAAC's brother.
ISAAC DAWSON showed up in the 1860 Trinity County, Texas Census married to ISABELLA. ISABELLA was a DEAN. I have a letter that proves this. The children living with ISAAC and ISABELLA were, THOMAS 16 yrs, JANE 15 yrs. ( I believe this is the 2 yr old J. DAWSON in the 1850 Census that was born in Illinois. I believe JANE had a chance to impress the Census Taker by raising her age from 13 to 15!). SARAH born in 1857. NANCY JANE born in 1859. NANCY first married JESSE SMITH, born in Benton County, Missouri. JESSE died trying to swim the Trinity River while the river was out of banks ( in Polk County, Texas). He died sometime after 1884. I have a deed that was dated in 1884, where they purchased land from Nancy's grandfather, John M. Dean. Nancy married my grandfather John Limuel LOVETT on 26 Nov 1879. This certificate can be found on Page 74 of Trinity County Records. Nancy and John LOVETT were married by a minister, David Felder Richardson. David Felder was the father of Matthew Limuel Richardson, the husband of Martha Ann DAWSON. Nancy was my grandmother. She and John LOVETT had two children. Oscar Lemual LOVETT, born 1 Sep 1894 and Nancy LOVETT YOUNG born 2 Feb 1896. Nancy DAWSON LOVETT died in 1896, three months after her daughter Nancy was born, from complications. Nancy DAWSON LOVETT was burried in Mount Zion Cemetery, in Helmic, Texas...
ISABELLA died in 1861. After this ISAAC married Dalphia GALLION, the daughter of John C. GALLION. There is a good article in the Trinity County Beginnings on J. C. GALLION> Dalphia and Isaac had a daughter, MARTHA ANN DAWSON, born in 1862. Dalphia either left Isaac or died before 1870, because Isaac had another wife in 1870, Caroline BUTLER, widow of Charles BUTLER and mother to Mary Hannah BUTLER DAWSON (wife of Thomas DAWSON).
In 1880 Isaac with wife Caroline Butler DAWSON was living in Moscow, Polk County, Texas. The children in the household were Sarah (Isabelle) 24 yrs old, Martha Ann DAWSON 17 yrs old.
Thomas DAWSON was also there with his wife Mary. Their children were William 10 yrs old, Mary Melissa DAWSON age 4, Thomas Jr. age 6/12. In 1884 there was another child born her name was Henrietta DAWSON.
1880 Census of Trinity County showed JESSIE and NANCY SMITH living next to WILLIAM DAWSON, born in Missourit with 28 yr old wife NANCY (SMITH). This Nancy was a sister to JESSE SMITH. I believe that this William DAWSON was a son of Isaac DAWSON and Elizabeth CARTWRIGHT. The reason for believing this, is my daddy made reference to Uncle "Will DAWSON" many times. Thisis the only William DAWSON that I can find that he could have been making reference to. I do not have proof of this.
In 1908 THOMAS DAWSON was living in Potomac, Polk County, Texas. This is where ISAAC and THOMAS moved to when they left Moscow, Texas. I never heard from ISAAC after 1880. My daddy, and Uncle and I went to the old house place in the mid 1960's. It was about a mile from where the Old Saw Mill Town of Potomic was located. There were 6 unmarked graves at the old house place. The people burried there are suppose to be ISAAC, THOMAS, SARAH CAROLINE and 3 unknowns. I have tried to find the site since then but have not been able to find it. Highway 59 has changed the scenery so much since then. Potomac is located 4 miles north of Corrigan, Texas on Hwy 59. You will not know when you get there.
In the 1910 Census of Angelina County, Texas there was a Thomas I. DAWSON 67 yrs old, white male, born in Illinois. He had a new wife, BETTIE 65 yrs old, born in Alabama. I don't know when Thomas died. In the Cemetery Book of Texas there is a Thomas I. DAWSON living in Potomac, Polk County, TX in 1908. Thomas was a resident of Sumpter, Trinity County, Texas in 1861. His occupation was listed as Carpenter on a Confederate Veteran 1908 County Roll. No Unit given. This may have been the Thomas I DAWSON who enlisted June 20, 1862 in Jefferson, Texas as a private, Company 1 18th Texas Infantry, OHILTREE's Regiment. Given furlough January 19, 1863 for disability and youth. Shown present for duty several times. Surrendered by E. Kirby SMITH June 2, 1865 Galveston, Texas. I have no record that Isaac DAWSON served in the Military.
